ABOUT US
With a proud history spanning over 58 years, Southwest Academy of Karate is the oldest karate school in the Chicagoland area—and now continues its legacy in LaPorte, Indiana. We are dedicated to shaping disciplined, confident, and respectful martial artists of all ages and backgrounds.
We specialize in Kyokushin Karate, the powerful and disciplined style founded by Mas Oyama. Our training focuses on full-contact sparring, traditional kata, and intense physical and mental conditioning. Every sixth class, students also receive instruction in judo and weapon defense, broadening their self-defense skills and martial arts experience.
To honor the roots of Kyokushin, we integrate Japanese terminology with English instruction—preserving tradition while making learning accessible.
Our founder, the late Hanshi Gregory T. Johnson (8th Dan), was a highly respected martial artist and instructor who also taught self-defense tactics at the Chicago Police Academy. His wisdom, strength, and passion live on through his dedicated black belt students who now carry the torch.
Whether you’re just beginning or continuing your martial arts journey, we’re here to guide you with respect, excellence, and tradition.
